
ABOUT
SHE.HERS.ELLA
Sonia Y Álvarez (she/her/ella) is a first generation Mexican-American bi-coastal Theatre Artist, working primarily in Costume Design, as well as a Producer and Core Leader with In The Margin. Her design aesthetic leans into playing heavily with texture and color to explore the nuances of characters and their relationships, layered with all of givens of the script and finding special details that uniquely identify and the character. She approaches each project as an opportunity to participate in a collaborative creative experience with all members of the team, while exploring new ways to uplift and underscore each other’s work. In her work, she seeks to create opportunities for emerging artist and regards mentorship as both privilege and responsibility crucial to the continued growth and evolution of BIPOC theatre art and narratives present in our society.
She has worked in the Bay area, New York City and at the regional level including five seasons as Costume Project Manager with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Her recent credits include La Egoísta (Costume Design) Actors Theatre of Louisville, Between Two Knees (Associate Costume Des.) at Perelman Performing Arts Center NYC, Exhaustion Arroyo: Dancin’ Trees in the Ravine (Costume Design) at Cutting Ball Theatre and August: Osage County (Costume Design) at St Louis Repertory Theatre.
